DC's Jim Lee has confirmed that Ezra Miller's version of The Flash gets his name from Grant Gustin's version in the Arrowverse crossover scene. Miller first appeared as Barry Allen in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, in a sequence where he travels back through time and appears to Ben Affleck's Batman. He had an expanded role in 2017's Justice League

However, Miller hasn't only appeared in the DC movies. He also had a surprise cameo on The Flash TV show, during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event that brought all of the characters of the Arrowverse together, as well as some from outside the shows. Brandon Routh, for example, appeared as his version of the Man of Steel from Superman Returns in the crossover event, while Smallville's Tom Welling also appeared. Miller's appearance was the biggest shock, though, as it had been kept under wraps. He cameos for about a minute alongside Gustin's Flash, and appears to not know that his superhero name is The Flash, leading to suspicion that the crossover event gave his character the idea for his name.
Now Lee, the Publisher and Chief Creative Officer at DC, confirmed that this is in fact the case. Speaking as part of the "Multiverse 101" panel at DC FanDome, Lee said that one of the best parts of filming Miller's cameo was that they got to introduce Miller's version of the character to his superhero name, calling it a "cool introduction" for Miller's Flash in the canon. You can read his full comments below.
"The dialogue had to be vague enough to not create too many expectations but to kind of solidify the fact that this is happening, that these Flashes are both The Flash in different universes AND the cool thing is Ezra's Flash was never named The Flash in the movies. He got his name from meeting Grant['s version of the character] who knew he was The Flash and that's so cool to have that introduction into the canon right? It came together at the last minute and it worked out great."
While Lee's revelation gives Miller's Flash a cute origin story for his superhero name, there is a problem. In 2016's Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) has a file listing all of the current superheroes, and there is a reference to The Flash in that. However, given that the movies now operate in a multiverse and across multiple timelines, this could be explained away by saying that Miller's Flash met Gustin's version before that scene takes place.
Regardless of that timeline snafu, the fact that Miller's Flash is given his name by Gustin's version is a neat way to acknowledge how different characters in the multiverse can affect and influence each other. It's also confirmation that events which happen in different properties can become canon across all. Hopefully there are more interesting plot devices like this when the multiverse is properly introduced in The Flash in two years, where Miller will be wearing his updated costume.
