Dear Ms. Quote,
My boyfriend and I are debating which is better for a hand job: lube or lotion. Which do you recommend?

Personally, if I’m the one giving my lover a hand job, I pick lube, especially if a hand job is followed by penetrative sex. I don’t like to take chances on what goes into my vagina or mouth. Although hand lotions are tested for skin safety, fragrances and other chemicals in hand lotions are a big concern for me personally. Also, some hand and body lotions and oils, especially olive oil and baby oil, aren’t compatible for safe condom use.
There are a lot of lubes on the market, but after testing a bunch of specialty high-end lubes a few months ago, KY Liquid is still my favorite. The Wal-Mart generic is fine, too. It works the same as the name brand. I like the glide feel, it lasts an appropriate amount of time, it’s not too greasy or oily, and it’s scent-less.
I’ve heard some complaints about some KY Liquid varieties (like the warming liquid) staining sheets and clothing, but I haven’t had that problem with the regular KY Liquid.
If you’re giving him (or he’s giving himself) a hand job just for the sake of getting off, I say that hand lotions are acceptable and a lot cheaper to use than lube. Aloe vera gel is a big favorite of mine. It has the same hand feel and staying power as KY. Also, aloe has natural healing powers for skin and is safe to consume orally if your sex play goes in that direction.
There are some flavored lubes on the market, too, but I haven’t tried them. I’m not a big fan or artificial food flavors.
