Bob Bashara’s murder trial has tongues wagging in the Detroit area.
Bashara is facing six felony charges involving the death of his wife, Jane. What makes this trial so salacious is: 1. Bashara and his wife were a popular couple in the upper middle class and socially conservative enclave of suburbs known as the Grosse Pointes, and 2. Bashara had a secet life as Master Bob and had a dungeon in a basement of a building that he owned in Grosse Pointe Park. It’s been reported by those who know Master Bob that he wanted his wife out of his life so that he could live the BDSM lifestyle 24/7.
Of course the county prosecutor is exposing a bunch details of Bashara’s BDSM lifestyle to paint his guilt. They’re details that are freaking out the public and I can safely assume several members of the jury. How many of these details are essential to the case and how many are gratuitous is hard to say. From what I’ve seen in up until now is that BDSM isn’t what led Bashara to have his wife killed by a hitman; he was just a guy who wanted to have his wife killed because it would be easier than divorcing her. All along he had lied about his marital status to his submissive mistress and seemed to be pretty emotionally unstable. A man doesn’t have to be a Dom to act that way.
My big concern is that a high profile court case and media story like this will paint all Dominants as men that are abusive and worse and BDSM as something that’s sexually, morally and psychologically wrong.
Surprisingly, one television news show that usually does a pretty poor job of reporting the news did a pretty good job of trying to present what BDSM is all about. It brought on a psychiatrist and a Dominatrix to explain that all of the sordid details that were being brought up in the trial are a lot more mainstream than people realize.
